“Target learns a second language as it expands to Quebec” by Thomas Lee at Star-Tribune.  “This month, Target Corp. will officially open its stores in Canada, its first reach beyond the United States. But if the Minneapolis-based retailer wants to truly master the art of operating in a foreign country, the province of Quebec offers the best chance to do so. Unlike the rest of Canada, French trumps English in Quebec, a reflection of the province’s deep attachment to its Quebecois culture and history.”  Read more:  https://www.startribune.com/business/201720981.html

Eye-on-Retail Tipsheet 4/5/13: Walmart good for America?; Target offends shoppers

“Wal-Mart: Good For America?” at Seeking Alpha.  “A study done by Ken Stone and Georgeanne Artz called “Impact of The Wal-Mart Phenomenon on Rural Communities” compared small towns in Iowa with and without Wal-Marts to see if there was a significant impact on the economy. The study looked at 34 small towns in Iowa with a population of 5,000 to 40,000 that had Wal-Marts for at least 10 years compared with 15 small towns that did not have Wal-Marts to see what the difference was. The results showed that a Wal-Mart moving into a small town did not automatically spell out death for small businesses. The small businesses that were positioned to do well against Wal-Mart were stores that served some type niche of market or had a specialty.”  Read more:  https://seekingalpha.com/article/1321381-wal-mart-good-for-america?source=email_rt_mc_focus_0

“What a Discount Retailer Could Teach Apple” by Suzanne McGee at Fiscal Times.  “Dollar General is well aware of what kind of company it is, its target audience and how to serve them better: its version of innovation, for instance, is to add tobacco products to the list of goods available in its stores. Apple, however, is a business whose model is caught in between the wariness of non-devotees – why should we pay up just for the brand name and the design, these folks argue? – and a lack of new products to appeal to its fans.”  Read more:  https://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Columns/2013/04/04/What-a-Discount-Retailer-Could-Teach-Apple.aspx#0ouRDijbZtgwLg8s.99

Home furnishings and decor made up 18% of Target’s annual sales in 2012, the same as the prior year and down from 19% in 2010. As part of the rollout, Target plans to advertise heavily in print, television and social media, although a spokeswoman declined to say how much the retailer is spending.  “Home decor is the new fashion,” independent analyst Marie Driscoll said. “The consumer is tired of buying another pair of jeans and turning to housewares for fashion and newness.”  Read more:  https://www.foxbusiness.com/news/2013/04/03/target-takes-bigger-steps-into-home-furnishings/

Eye-on-Retail Tipsheet 4/3/13: Walmart stalls in India; Walgreens sales up

“Wal-Mart’s Path to Power in India Hits Its Limits: The Lawyers” by Megha Bahree at WSJ.  “Today, Wal-Mart’s advance on India is barely moving.  The company opened just five wholesale stores in the country last year—well below the 22 planned. This year, Wal-Mart plans to open eight locations, a person familiar with the company’s plans said.  Part of the reason lies in what people in the industry say is India’s labyrinthine process for developing commercial real estate and operating stores. But one of the biggest reasons has been a compliance crackdown at Wal-Mart.”  Read more:  https://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324373204578373830411211410.html

“eBay’s post-turnaround message: Come on back” by Kevin Kelleher at CNN Money.  “Behind that jargon is a subtle but significant shift in how eBay sees itself. What started out as a place for people to auction off the stuff gathering dust in their garages has become a company that offers the online storefront for small, entrepreneurial retailers (eBay.com), the digital infrastructure to help large brick-and-mortar chains to merge online and offline sales (GSI Commerce), and the payment platform to handle the money side (PayPal). “Yes, Marketers, There Is Life After Mommyblogging” by Morra Aarons-Mela.  “”We buy stuff too.” That’s the rallying cry I’ve heard from widely read female bloggers over age 49, who are frustrated that a well-established cadre of younger women with young children — known as “mommybloggers” — garner extensive promotional contracts with major brand advertisers, while Boomer-aged women online are often ignored.  What marketers seem to be missing is that Boomer women are actually outspending younger generations online — and not on the products that might come to mind when you picture the 50+ set. Boomers averaged $650 spent online vs. Gen X at $581 and Gen Y at $429.”  Read more:  https://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/04/yes_marketers_there_is_life_af.html?utm_source=Socialflow&utm_medium=Tweet&utm_campaign=Socialflow

Eye-on-Retail Tipsheet 4/2/13: Target & Thrifty Canadians; What’s a gTLD?

“Target Sets Sights on Thrifty Canadians” by Mark Hamstra at Supermarket News.  “In Canada, thrift is not a virtue that businesses may or may not choose to embrace — it is often ingrained as a core value.  To be fair, Canada’s economy was weaker then than it is now, imposing a tight-fisted mentality upon both consumers and merchants. But I have since learned that value and thrift are still generally more important and pervasive qualities in Canada than they are in the U.S…Those will both be formidable obstacles for Minneapolis-based Target Corp. to overcome as it seeks to export its “cheap chic” ethos to the land of the loonie.”  Read more: https://supermarketnews.com/blog/target-sets-sights-thrifty-canadians#ixzz2PJ3VSB6f

But research from Afilias, which provides domain registry services around the world, has found that few consumers are aware of the change – and many would rather use traditional web addresses than the new formats. Thus, 73% of UK adults would rather visit a heritage address such as www.adidas.com/shop, rather than www.shop.adidas. In the US the figure is 61%.”   Read more:  https://etail.sharedby.co/share/MjPVXA

“Several major retailers grow online sales faster than Amazon in Q4” at Internet Retailer.  “The Top 500 retailers that did the best job of growing their year-end sales generally were those that got their discount message—and strategy—out early and often, says Howard Davidowitz, chairman of retail consulting firm Davidowitz & Associates. For example, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (No. 4) announced in September it was giving its Facebook fans early access to layaway and in early October Sears Holdings Corp. (No.8), which operates Sears.com and Kmart.com, added a layaway delivery option.”  Read more:  https://www.internetretailer.com/2013/04/01/several-major-retailers-grow-online-sales-faster-amazon

Eye-on-Retail Tipsheet 4/1/13: Walmart Express “doing well”; Lowe’s April Fools

“Will Dollar Stores Rule the Retail World?” by Christopher Matthews at Time.   “It’s difficult to see dollar stores maintaining their current growth rates for much longer. Walmart recently announced a plan to ramp up its efforts to build smaller Neighborhood Market outlets, which will be on average about one-third the size of its traditional supercenters. These stores will be better positioned to attract customers in urban centers where Walmart has lagged the competition.”  Read more: https://business.time.com/2013/04/01/will-dollar-stores-rule-the-retail-world/#ixzz2PDTqL2Iv

We have eight or nine in various stages of approval and construction in North Carolina.”  There has been talk that the Stedman store has done so well it may be expanding. Wertz said there are no plans to expand at this time.  All the Walmart Express stores are about 12,000 to 15,000 square feet. They carry roughly the same assortment of foods and merchandise and feature a store pharmacy. Most sell gas.  “They do vary a little bit in appearance,” Wertz said. “We modify them appropriately, depending on location and requirements of the city.”  Read more:  https://www.fayobserver.com/articles/2013/04/01/1246725?sac=fo.local
