“Canadian Tire names Michael Medline as new chief executive” at Reuters via Globe & Mail. ” Retailer Canadian Tire Corp. reported a higher quarterly profit and named Michael Medline chief executive, effective Dec. 1. Journal.  “Wal-Mart Inc.’s e-commerce operation has quietly expanded yet again, bringing its total presence at Sunnyvale Business Park to about 312,000 square feet. Wal-Mart recently struck a deal to lease about 127,000 square feet in two buildings at 680 and 840 West California Ave. The lease, which was completed several weeks ago and not previously reported.” Read more

Twin Cities: “TargetExpress coming to Highland Crossing shopping center” by Kavita Kumar at Star-Tribune. “The Minneapolis-based retailer will open its new small-format location next July in the Highland Crossing shopping center, Target told the Star Tribune Tuesday. Nashville: “Kroger introduces lower pricing” by G. Chambers Williams at The Tennessean.  “But the question is whether Kroger is doing this because of a competitive need, or an opportunity to boost natural and organic food sales,” he said. “Wal-Mart has announced that it is going to get much more active in natural and organics, so that could be part of the impetus for this — sort of a pre-emptive move.” Read more

 

“Walgreens July Sales Increase 6.1 Percent – Customer Traffic in Comp Stores -2.6%”  “Total front-end sales increased 1.4 percent in July compared with the same month in fiscal 2013, while comparable store front-end sales increased 1.1 percent. “Walgreen CFO replaced by Kraft Foods Exec” at Chicago Bus. Journal.  “Walgreen Co. “Target cuts outlook on charges from data breach, debt” at MarketWatch.  “Target Corp. shares fell more than 3% in premarket trade Tuesday, after the company lowered its second-quarter earnings outlook because of charges stemming from last year’s data breach and the retirement of debt. “Long Island Wants to Designate new Costco as “Tourist Destination” for Tax Incentive Purposes” at New York Post.  “Queens Councilmember Costa Constantinides just announced a new effort to ensure Walmart will not be allowed into a proposed development in Astoria Cove…Meanwhile, out on Long Island…they’re trying to bribe Costco into opening a store in Oceanside. So determined is the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency, it’s working overtime to get around state laws that prevent tax breaks for retailers. The agency’s solution? According to Newsday, it plans to make Costco eligible by defining it as a “tourist destination.” Read more
