Eye-on-Retail Tipsheet 4/15/13: Lowe’s must “Man Up”; Google: Entire World Online by 2020

“Game on: Why Walmart is ranking suppliers on sustainability” by Mark Gunther at Green Biz.  “So Walmart is asking lots of questions of its suppliers. Among them: How can wheat be grown with less water and fertilizer? How can chemicals of concern be removed from toys? What mining practices were used to extract copper, gold and silver for computers or jewelry? What percentage of your televisions sold last year were Energy Star certified? Do the grapes in a bottle of wine come from a farm with a biodiversity management plan? How much water was needed to produce those polyester pants?  If this sounds like a massive and fiendishly complicated undertaking, well, it is. It has been in the works since 2009, when Walmart unveiled The Sustainability Consortium, a nonprofit coalition led by the University of Arkansas and Arizona State University.  Read more:  https://www.greenbiz.com/blog/2013/04/15/game-why-walmart-ranking-suppliers-sustainability

“If Lowe’s Wants to Get Serious About Home Depot, It’ll Have to Man Up” by Pam Goodfellow at Forbes.  “So what’s wrong with Lowe’s?  At first glance, the big box seems to be holding its own, having climbed in customer preference share over the past few years, as Home Depot has remained relatively stagnant. Upon closer inspection, though, it’s apparent that Lowe’s most loyal customers are consistently dominated by females, while Home Depot maintains a more even mix of shoppers. This is significant because men, on average, tend to spend upwards of 35% more per month on home improvement supplies than females. In other words, two male shoppers are worth about three female shoppers”  Read more:  https://www.forbes.com/sites/prospernow/2013/04/15/if-lowes-wants-to-get-serious-about-home-depot-itll-have-to-man-up/

“Costco, Macy’s Eye China E-Commerce” by Doug Young at Forbes.  “Their strategy reflects an emerging trend that has big western chains circumventing the traditional retailing route into China, seeking to avoid the big costs and risks that have led to big losses and retreats for names like Best Buy and Home Depot. But the online strategy also carriers its own risks, as China’s e-commerce space is also quite crowded and retailers that go online face an uphill road getting recognized by brand-conscious Chinese consumers.”  Read more:  https://www.forbes.com/sites/dougyoung/2013/04/08/costco-macys-eye-china-e-commerce/

“J.C. Penney: Firing CEO Johnson Was Probably Easy. His Exit Package Is Tiny” by Abram Brown at Forbes.  “Johnson, who’s been replaced at J.C. Penney by his predecessor, Mike Ullman, will receive just $148,924 in severance, a truly paltry figure compared to the exit packages that many ousted executives leave with. Investors should take solace in that. Johnson was earning $1.5 million in a base salary, and, of course, could’ve earned millions of dollars more in lucrative stock options. If his turnaround strategy had been working.”  Read more:  https://www.forbes.com/sites/abrambrown/2013/04/08/j-c-penney-firing-ceo-johnson-was-probably-easy-his-exit-package-is-tiny/

Eye-on-Retail Tipsheet 4/5/13: Walmart good for America?; Target offends shoppers

“Wal-Mart: Good For America?” at Seeking Alpha.  “A study done by Ken Stone and Georgeanne Artz called “Impact of The Wal-Mart Phenomenon on Rural Communities” compared small towns in Iowa with and without Wal-Marts to see if there was a significant impact on the economy. The study looked at 34 small towns in Iowa with a population of 5,000 to 40,000 that had Wal-Marts for at least 10 years compared with 15 small towns that did not have Wal-Marts to see what the difference was. The results showed that a Wal-Mart moving into a small town did not automatically spell out death for small businesses. The small businesses that were positioned to do well against Wal-Mart were stores that served some type niche of market or had a specialty.”  Read more:  https://seekingalpha.com/article/1321381-wal-mart-good-for-america?source=email_rt_mc_focus_0
